An F-16 fighter jet flew directly in front of a civilian aircraft on Saturday to force a pilot to exit restricted airspace near Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred while President Donald Trump was in West Palm Beach casting an early ballot for the upcoming midterm elections. U.S. military officials confirmed the interception took place at approximately 12:20 p.m. ET.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command, known as NORAD, deployed the F-16 to establish contact with the aircraft. The jet executed a tactic referred to by the command as a headbutt maneuver. This procedure involves flying closely ahead of a target to gain its pilot's attention. NORAD described the action as a standard protocol for such situations.
The close approach succeeded in establishing communication between the military jet and the civilian pilot. The pilot subsequently steered the aircraft out of the designated zone, adhering to the issued flight instructions. The plane had violated a Temporary Flight Restriction, or TFR, which was active over the area at the time of the incident.
NORAD noted that the pilot may face federal authorities upon landing. The command stated the pilot is subject to enforcement action for violating the TFR. The Federal Aviation Administration issues these restrictions for various events, including sporting matches, weather events, and political gatherings attended by high-profile figures. Pilots receive updates on these zones through Notices to Airmen, or NOTAMs, and are encouraged to monitor them regularly.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were observed at a polling station in West Palm Beach on Saturday afternoon. The president cast his vote ahead of next week's national midterm elections. When asked if he voted along party lines, Mr. Trump replied, "Very much so." He then departed for a campaign rally in Georgia.
Recent campaign appearances by the president have led to multiple temporary flight restrictions across the country. Earlier this month, NORAD reported intercepting a plane over Clemson, South Carolina. That incident occurred while Mr. Trump supported Darline Graham's Senate campaign. A similar interception took place over Cincinnati, Ohio, just days prior to the Clemson event.
