State agencies in Connecticut have long relied on paper documents for identity verification, but a new digital tool will soon offer residents an alternative on their phones.
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles announced that its mobile identification app, Connecticut Mobile ID, will officially launch on November 18. The application allows users to verify their identity and age through a smartphone. It is free to download and will be available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. To set up the app, residents must have their physical Connecticut driver's license or state ID card on hand.
Gubernatorial and agency officials framed the release as a move toward more accessible government services. Governor Ned Lamont stated in a statement that digitizing IDs is another step in making state services more convenient. Tony Guerrera, the DMV commissioner, described the launch as a milestone for the agency. He said the mobile ID represents a continued commitment to adopting technology and providing convenient access to services.
Upon launch, the Transportation Security Administration will accept the Connecticut Mobile ID at security checkpoints in participating airports across the country. This includes the Bradley International Airport and Tweed New Haven Airport. State officials emphasized that the digital credential is designed to complement, not replace, physical documents. Residents must continue to carry their physical license or ID card.
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection will begin providing guidance to businesses and license holders who choose to accept mobile IDs. However, businesses are not required to accept the digital credentials. Any business that opts in must use a compatible verification application. The mobile ID cannot serve as a substitute for a physical driver's license during interactions with authorities. It also cannot be used for voting or as an express pass.
State officials noted that they expect acceptance of the mobile ID to expand as more organizations adopt the technology. Additional information regarding the app is expected to be published before the November 18 launch date.
