Andrew Reyes, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent, stood before Brooklyn Federal Court on Thursday to answer charges related to a February crash in which he allegedly struck a pedestrian with his agency vehicle.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella, Jr., stated that Reyes showed a total disregard for human life during the incident on Feb. 3. The collision occurred near the corner of Ocean Parkway and Beverly Road in the Midwood neighborhood.
Prosecutors allege that Reyes was driving northbound on the southbound side of Ocean Parkway at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Feb. 3. He had his emergency lights and sirens on and allegedly ran a red light before hitting a man crossing the sidewalk.
Court documents indicate that Reyes did not stop to help the unconscious victim. Instead, he allegedly dragged the man’s body through snow onto the sidewalk and propped him up on a bench. Reyes then retrieved his bag, placed it beside the victim, and drove away in the FBI vehicle.
The victim survived the injuries. Federal officials said Reyes never contacted emergency services and later provided false statements to investigators regarding his role in the accident.
Reyes was a special agent from 2023 until recently but is no longer employed by the agency. He faces charges for willfully depriving an individual of constitutional rights while acting under color of law and making false statements.
During Thursday’s arraignment, Reyes wept while his parents signed papers to secure $100,000 bail using their assets as collateral. He left the courthouse with his family and attorney and declined to answer questions from reporters. A conviction could result in up to ten years in prison.
