The Village of Larchmont has secured a $400,000 grant to purchase a vacuum truck. The equipment is designated for cleaning the stormwater systems within the village's MS4 area. This work aims to prevent pollution from entering the local waterbodies of the Hutchinson River and Mamaroneck River watershed.
The funding is part of a state-wide effort by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 3. The agency recently distributed more than $30.4 million in grants to support 31 different projects. These initiatives focus on updating water infrastructure, protecting drinking water, reducing harmful algal blooms, and improving habitats throughout the Hudson Valley.
Kelly Turturro, the director of DEC Region 3, noted that the investment supports Governor Hochul's goals. He stated that the $30.4 million allocation will help communities upgrade essential infrastructure, safeguard drinking water, and build resiliency against flooding.
The total award is split between two specific grant programs. The Water Quality Improvement Project grant program will support 15 projects with more than $29.1 million. A separate Non-Agricultural Nonpoint Source and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Planning Grant program will provide $1.3 million to 16 projects.
Larchmont is one of the communities receiving these targeted funds. The village plans to apply the $400,000 directly to the acquisition of the vacuum truck for immediate use in its stormwater maintenance operations.
