Allegheny County officials confirmed Thursday that Patrick Lynch died from multiple blunt force injuries. The medical examiner ruled his death a suicide. Lynch, 42, fell from a five-story parking garage in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon on Tuesday. His body was discovered near the base of the structure at approximately 4:15 p.m.
The tragedy involved Lynch and his two children, James, 8, and Caroline, 6. Authorities stated that the incident was not an accident. First responders pronounced James dead at 4:35 p.m., one minute before his sister. Both children also died from blunt force injuries, according to the medical examiner's office. Their deaths were classified as homicides.
Lynch held a position at an Ivy League university. The family resided in the affluent community of Mt. Lebanon. The garage stood five stories high. The timing of the deaths placed them within a 20-minute window of the initial discovery. The medical examiner revealed the cause of death for the father one day after announcing the findings for the children.
The case remains under review by local authorities. The medical examiner's office provided the specific medical details to CBS News on Thursday. The findings close the initial investigation into the manner of death for all three victims. No further details regarding the investigation were released on Friday. The garage location serves as a central hub for residents in the area.
