Seventy-nine percent of real estate agents use electronic signature technology, according to the National Association of Realtors 2025 Technology Survey. The data was reported by HousingWire. Despite widespread adoption among professionals, the process often creates friction for buyers and sellers who receive contracts on their phones. Many consumers face account creation screens, email verification steps, or app download requests before they can sign a simple two-page addendum.

The primary distinction between e-signature tools lies in the requirements for the signer versus the sender. In most workflows, only the sender needs a registered account. The recipient receives an email link that opens in a mobile browser. This setup allows a buyer at a showing or a seller at an airport to sign a document without installing software or logging in. However, administrators can change security settings to require a signer account, which disrupts the seamless mobile experience.

Lumin offers a free plan that allows up to five documents per workspace per month for e-signature use. Paid plans for Lumin start at approximately $9 per month and include a seven-day trial. The platform integrates with Google Workspace, allowing agents to edit and send files from Google Drive without re-uploading them. Lumin also provides an audit trail and a certificate of completion for signed documents. Its identity verification feature checks the signer against a digital credential at the point of signing.

DocuSign serves large brokerages and high-volume teams. By default, recipients do not need an account to sign a DocuSign envelope. An administrator can enable a setting that requires an account, but the default mobile page states that customers do not need the app to sign and return documents. Adobe Acrobat Sign requires a paid subscription for senders, though signers do not need an Adobe ID. This tool is best for teams already using Adobe products, as it offers strong optical character recognition and offline editing capabilities.

Dropbox Sign provides three free signature requests per month and unlimited self-signing for users who store contracts in Dropbox. Signers do not need a Dropbox account; the sender only needs to input their email address. SignNow offers a free trial for senders and supports browser and app signing. It is designed for cost-conscious teams that reuse templates for repeat paperwork such as rental applications. Smallpdf serves as a browser tool for quick self-signing. Users can sign a PDF on a phone without registering or installing an app. Signature requests sent through Smallpdf remain available to recipients for two weeks.

Electronic signatures are legally binding in the United States under the ESIGN Act and UETA. Similar laws exist in the European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, and other regions. Some real estate documents, including deeds or notarized forms, may still require wet signatures or remote online notarization depending on state laws. Agents should test the signer path on a phone with no app installed before sending a contract. If a test document triggers a sign-up screen, the setting or the tool should be adjusted. Resending the signing link is recommended if a client cannot finish the process, as this avoids unexpected account prompts that can appear when opening PDF attachments in separate apps.
