National Theatre Live will release a filmed recording of 'Golden Boy' in cinemas beginning Nov. 5. Josh O'Connor stars in the production, which recently concluded a sold-out run at London's Almeida Theatre.
The play adapts Clifford Odets' acclaimed drama and features direction by Sam Yates. O'Connor portrays Joe Bonaparte, a character who trades a career in music for professional boxing. The official synopsis describes Bonaparte as a gifted violinist who faces a choice between fame in the ring and his artistic past.
An exclusive clip released by the theater shows O'Connor embracing a younger version of his character playing the violin. In the footage, O'Connor's face is covered in blood from a boxing injury. The recording captures a live performance that included a string quartet on stage. The cast also includes Hayley Squires and Daniel Mays.
This production marks O'Connor's first return to the London stage in five years. During that time, he won an Emmy for his role as King Charles in 'The Crown.' He has also appeared in films such as 'La Chimera,' 'Challengers,' 'Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man,' and 'Disclosure Day.' Despite recent speculation about him joining the James Bond franchise, this stage recording is his next scheduled screen appearance. Tickets for the worldwide cinema release are currently available through the National Theatre Live website.
