President Donald Trump announced the reopening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Monday, November 2, in Washington, D.C. The ceremony took place one day before the midterm elections. The pool sits between the Lincoln Memorial and the World War II Memorial. It had been closed for months for repairs.
The administration originally planned the renovations for the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations earlier this year. The work included upgrades to the pool surface, plumbing, and surrounding infrastructure. Trump spoke near the memorial to praise the refurbished water feature. He held up a photo during his remarks.
The pool first reopened ahead of the July 4 anniversary. Shortly after that opening, sections of the new blue surface began to peel. Officials had to shut the site down again for additional fixes. The timeline extended the closure well past the initial schedule.
A dispute arose over the cause of the deterioration. Trump initially blamed the damage on vandalism. He alleged that individuals had intentionally harmed the pool. Federal prosecutors later dropped charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn. Hearn had been accused of breaking the surface.
Court documents showed the damage resulted from mistakes during the renovation process. The contractor acknowledged problems with the materials and installation. The resolution of the charges cleared the way for the final completion of the project.
The site has served as a landmark on the National Mall for more than a century. It hosts national ceremonies and presidential events. The administration presented the restoration as part of its effort to improve public spaces in Washington. The pool is now open to the public.
