Anthropic filed final paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday for an initial public offering that could value the company between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion. The registration statement, known as a Form S-1, was submitted in the early morning hours. The company will trade under the ticker symbol ANT.
The filing marks a major step for a firm launched five years ago by Dario Amodei and a group of researchers who left OpenAI. Amodei led the breakaway team due to concerns about safety standards at the rival company run by Sam Altman. The prospectus did not specify the number of shares to be offered or the price range.
Financial data included in the filing shows rapid expansion alongside heavy losses. Revenue for the first half of the year reached $16.3 billion, a 1,300% increase. Adjusted operating income rose to $1.6 billion, reversing a loss of $1.8 billion in the same period last year. However, the company reported a net loss of nearly $81 billion from January to June, up from $13 billion in the prior year.
Raj Joshi, a senior vice president at Moody's, called the shift to positive adjusted operating income a strong positive for the AI sector. He noted that the financial swing indicates improving stability for the broader technology ecosystem.
The company faces ongoing disputes with the U.S. Department of Defense. The Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply chain risk and blacklisted the firm after Amodei objected to the use of its models for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. Anthropic has sued the department in two federal district courts to challenge the designation.
Market conditions remain volatile for artificial intelligence stocks. SpaceX, which listed in June at a valuation of roughly $1.8 trillion, currently trades near its initial price of $150. Analysts point to interest rate pressures and debt financing costs as key risks for high-growth firms. Anthropic previously valued itself at $965 billion in a private round in May.
An IPO could take place as soon as November. The timing follows a period of uncertainty where investors weigh the potential economic benefits of AI against the costs of infrastructure expansion. Other major tech firms, including Nvidia and Meta, have seen share prices slide in recent weeks due to these concerns.
