A twelve-year-old girl stood before a Fresno County court on Monday to recount the events that followed the death of Clovis educator Geoff Bernardi. The child, whose name was withheld to protect her privacy, is the daughter of Misty Rose Gomez and the stepdaughter of Antonio Garcia. Both adults are currently charged with murder in connection with Bernardi's death, with prosecutors alleging they conspired to commit the crime.

During emotional testimony, the girl described the period immediately after Garcia was detained by investigators. She recalled a conversation in which her mother eventually confessed to the truth. The child stated that Gomez told her they had hurt Bernardi really badly. When pressed further, the girl testified that her mother admitted they had killed Geoffrey because they had done something very bad.

Prosecutors outline a timeline in which Bernardi, a well-known figure in the Clovis education community, was attacked in December. The state alleges that Garcia physically carried out the assault while Gomez helped orchestrate the crime. After the attack, the couple fled to Mexico, where they remained for several months before being arrested in August and returned to Fresno County.

A significant portion of the testimony focused on how the girls were transported across the border. The child testified that she and her sister were told they were going to Los Angeles for a short vacation, perhaps to visit Universal Studios. Instead, they were driven to the southern border and took a bus to Michoacán, where they reunited with Garcia. The girls stayed in Mexico for several months until their mother and stepfather were arrested.

The court also heard that neither of the girls' biological fathers was informed about the move to Mexico. Prosecutors have argued that the decision to flee the country was a deliberate attempt to avoid prosecution for the murder. The girls were ultimately returned to the United States following the arrests of the two defendants.

Erin Adams, the mother of the deceased, also took the stand to describe the condition of her son after the attack. She recalled that Bernardi was beaten beyond recognition, with every bone in his skull and face broken, as well as his hands. Adams noted that her family was unaware that Gomez was married at the time she was dating her son. When asked by a prosecutor if Gomez had ever mentioned her marital status, Adams answered no.

Adams further described her interactions with Gomez while Bernardi was hospitalized. She testified that Gomez spent considerable time at the hospital during the period when her son was fighting for his life. This presence in the hospital room stood in stark contrast to the investigators' current allegations regarding her role in the crime.

Earlier in the investigation, Gomez had told authorities that Bernardi had been attacked by a homeless man. However, prosecutors now contend that Garcia was the one who assaulted him and that Gomez helped conceal the true nature of the attack. The case has drawn significant public attention due to both the nature of the murder and the months-long disappearance of the two young daughters, who were kept in Mexico.

Gomez and Garcia remain in custody as they face murder charges. The preliminary hearing is expected to continue with additional witness testimony in the coming days.
