A two-century-old question of scale now has a local answer in Dorchester.

Stone & Skillet began selling its New-England Style English muffins in Target stores in August 2026. The bakery, located on Quincy Street, produces millions of these items annually. The company previously supplied Whole Foods, Fresh Thyme, and Wegmans. This new placement marks the first time its products occupy shelves in a major national retail chain.

Cam Meekins co-founded the business in 2014 with his brothers Kyle and Nick. Kyle worked as a salesman for a bread company when he heard repeated requests for an artisan English muffin. His employer did not pursue the idea, so the brothers developed a recipe in Kyle’s apartment. They tested the dough on a stone countertop and cooked it in a cast iron skillet, which inspired the company name. The brothers designed the muffins to be dense and thick enough to serve as burger buns for restaurants.

The product gained initial traction at local farmers markets before Whole Foods began carrying it. That retail debut shifted the company’s strategy from serving chefs to reaching general consumers. Cam Meekins stated that the partnership allows the business to invest more in its facility and hire additional staff. He described the moment of seeing the muffins across the country as a "pretty cool moment." He said the team feels "blessed" to partner with a large chain while maintaining its local roots.

Jocelyn Pacheco, the director of operations, emphasized that the work remains in Dorchester despite the national reach. She noted that every new partnership creates opportunities for employees to grow. The bakery operates near the Commonwealth Kitchen enterprise and employs dozens of workers. Dave Wedge, a company spokesman, confirmed the facility produces millions of muffins a year. The company plans to keep growing its footprint while keeping production local.

Customers in other regions are noticing the change. Teresa Virgilio, a resident of New York, wrote to The Reporter that she was surprised to find the muffins in Target. She usually buys them at Whole Foods and cited the garlic herb flavor as a favorite. The expansion into Target represents a major step for a brand that started in a single bakery. The company continues to produce all its goods in its Dorchester facility.

The deal places a small business product alongside major national brands in a high-traffic retail environment. The company maintains that the partnership allows it to reinvest in local jobs and infrastructure. The muffins are now available in Target locations across the United States.
