East Lansing authorities have opened an investigation into a series of violent incidents that occurred near the Michigan State University campus on Halloween. Police Chief Jennifer Brown announced the details during a press conference on Sunday afternoon. The department handled four separate calls for service, two of which involved gunfire that resulted in five injuries.
The first shooting took place near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Officers arrived to find that multiple rounds had been discharged. Three individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a hospital. Brown reported that two of those victims were in stable condition, though the status of the third patient had not yet been determined by medical staff.
A second shooting occurred later that night in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot in that incident. Both victims were listed in stable condition. Brown stated that officers recovered several firearms from the scene. She noted that detectives were still determining if those specific weapons were used in the shootings.
The chief indicated that several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. Police have not yet clarified if the two shootings are linked. It is also unclear whether any of the injured parties are students at Michigan State. A university spokesperson confirmed that the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety assisted local officers. The spokesperson stated that the criminal activity did not involve a threat to campus and did not take place on MSU’s property.
The volume of emergency calls during the holiday period was high. Brown said the East Lansing Fire Department responded to 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period. Of those, 75 incidents occurred leading up to and during Halloween night.
