East Lansing recorded four separate incidents on Halloween night, a period when local emergency services typically handle a surge in calls.
Two of those incidents involved gunfire that left five people injured near the Michigan State University campus, according to East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown.
The first shooting occurred at the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Officers found that multiple shots had been fired. Three people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Officials listed two victims in stable condition but did not immediately disclose the status of the third.
A second shooting took place later that night in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot and are currently listed in stable condition. Brown stated that police recovered multiple guns from the scene, though officials have not confirmed if those specific weapons were used in the attacks.
Brown said several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. The department has not determined if the two shootings are linked. It is also unclear if any of the five victims are students at the university.
A spokesperson for Michigan State University noted that the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted local police. The spokesperson added that the criminal activity did not involve a threat to the campus and did not take place on university property.
The East Lansing Fire Department responded to 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period. Of those, 75 occurred specifically into Halloween night.
