Passengers on the MBTA Commuter Rail Providence Line faced a prolonged disruption Tuesday night after a mechanical failure stopped a train in a tunnel. The incident forced riders to exit the darkened vehicle and walk along the rails to reach the Ruggles station in Boston.

Dan Brogan, a rider on the train, spent approximately two hours seated in a car with no power. He described the interior as stuffy and hot, with no circulating air. Brogan said the group eventually disembarked in the middle of a dark tunnel and walked on the rails to the Ruggles stop.

Transit officials attributed the stoppage to fall leaves. These leaves create a slippery film on the tracks, which can interfere with wheel traction during braking. Despite the mechanical cause, Brogan noted that riders received limited information about their next steps while waiting.

The ordeal continued after the group reached Ruggles. Brogan reported that passengers waited another hour and a half on the staircase and platform. He said there were no clear announcements or overhead messages explaining the delay. Brogan had previously attended a MassDOT conference where rail reliability was a primary topic of discussion.

The MBTA stated that all passengers were safely transferred to another train. Brogan said the lack of communication left a lasting impression on him, noting that the uncertainty of the situation was more difficult than the long wait itself.
