Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio and challenger Kimberly Wilder presented contrasting visions for the 2nd Assembly District on October 30, 2026, as the November 3 election draws near. The two candidates discussed their approaches to housing, energy costs, and state spending during an interview with TBR News Media.

Giglio, a Republican seeking reelection, emphasized her six years of service in the state Assembly and her prior decade on the Riverhead Town Board. A construction company owner since 1997, she sits on the Assembly’s Ways and Means Committee. She framed her legislative priorities around fiscal conservatism, public safety, and workforce housing.

The incumbent argued that state spending has grown without solving the cost of living crisis. She attributed high energy rates to state climate mandates that pressure utility customers. Giglio stated that the heavy hand of government, rather than common sense solutions, has worsened affordability issues on Long Island.

Regarding housing, Giglio proposed a first-time homebuyer savings account. This plan would allow residents to save pretax earnings for down payments and closing costs starting at age 14. She advocated for more ownership opportunities, such as condominiums, and stressed local control over development to protect schools and groundwater.

Wilder, an independent running on the Voter Options ballot line, positioned herself as a grassroots voice outside the traditional political parties. A Riverhead resident and mother, she formed Riverhead Area School Info to address local school district issues. She argued that residents need more influence over state decisions.

Wilder’s platform focuses on expanding accessory dwelling units to allow families to house relatives or seniors. She also proposed reviewing cooperative housing models as an accessible path to property ownership. She believes affordability requires addressing structural problems rather than relying solely on individual tax credits.

On energy and accountability, Wilder called for a democratically elected board for the Long Island Power Authority to improve transparency. She opposed locating data centers on Long Island due to water resource concerns and urged a thorough cleanup of the Brookhaven landfill. She supported a universal health care system, citing potential savings from reduced insurance administration.

The candidates diverged on the role of social services. Giglio argued that programs should help people transition toward financial independence without discouraging work. Wilder contended that government should strengthen support systems and address the underlying causes of poverty for vulnerable residents.

Both candidates agreed that affordability is a major challenge for local families. They both emphasized the need to protect water quality and support local businesses. Giglio cited her cross-party relationships as evidence of her ability to deliver results, while Wilder argued that an independent perspective would broaden public participation in state government.
