The federal trial of Matthew Farwell, a former Stoughton police officer, continued on Monday as the defense called its final expert witnesses to the stand. Farwell is charged with strangling Sandra Birchmore in her Canton apartment in early 2021. The incident occurred after Birchmore told Farwell she was pregnant with his child, a claim later contradicted by DNA evidence.
Dr. William Ralston, the chief medical examiner for Kentucky, was the first witness called on Monday. He is expected to provide forensic analysis regarding the cause of death. Two other forensic experts are also scheduled to testify for the defense during the proceeding.
The jury began hearing arguments in this high-profile case on October 9. Farwell, who served as a police Explorers volunteer, is accused of using his position to groom Birchmore when she was fifteen. The prosecution alleges he sexually exploited and abused her before continuing the relationship after she became an adult.
The defense claims Birchmore died by suicide, a theory Farwell is accused of staging. This trial has attracted national media coverage, following recent high-profile criminal cases in Massachusetts involving Lindsay Clancy and Karen Read. The courtroom prohibits video recording due to the federal nature of the trial.
With the medical examiner on the stand, the trial is approaching its final stages. The defense may choose to rest its case after today's testimony. If the defense rests, closing arguments could take place later this week, moving the case toward a verdict.
