Moonshot cuts AI costs as new model rivals top rivals

Kimi K3.1 Pro boosts performance while slashing API prices by a third, narrowing the gap with leading proprietary systems.

By Eduardo Salazar ·

Moonshot AI has lowered the cost of enterprise-grade artificial intelligence by 33 percent with the launch of Kimi K3.1 Pro, a move that pressures competitors to match pricing while the new model climbs to fourth place on global intelligence benchmarks. The update keeps the model's massive 2.8 trillion parameter structure intact but significantly reduces the expense for developers and businesses relying on API access. This strategic shift aims to make high-performance reasoning more accessible without sacrificing the complex capabilities required for agentic workflows.

The financial impact of the release is immediate for organizations managing compute budgets. Input token costs have dropped from $3 to $2 per million tokens, while output costs have fallen from $15 to $10. Cache hit prices also decreased from $0.30 to $0.20. Although the model generates 14 percent more output tokens than its predecessor, the net cost per task on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index remains nearly identical at $1.98, compared to $2.00 for the previous version. This pricing structure positions the model competitively against other high-end systems while offering tangible savings for high-volume users.

Performance metrics show a substantial leap in capability, particularly in autonomous tasks. Kimi K3.1 Pro scores 55 points on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, an 11-point increase over its predecessor. This places it just three points behind Claude Opus 5.5, which holds the top spot with 58 points. The model also surpasses Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Muse Wonder Full, which both score 56 points. If Moonshot follows through on its plan to release model weights by November 4, 2026, the gap between the best open-weights and proprietary models will shrink from 12 points to just three, fundamentally altering the market dynamics for open-source adoption.

Gains in agentic performance are the most significant differentiator for this release. On the GDPval-AA benchmark, the model achieves an Elo rating of 1,846, a jump of 312 points from the previous version. This score trails only Claude Opus 5.5 and Muse Wonder Full. In terminal-based coding tests, specifically Terminal-Bench 4.0, the new model records a 65.7 percent success rate. This is a dramatic improvement from the 13 percent recorded by its predecessor and places it just behind Claude Opus 5.5 at 66.4 percent, while significantly outperforming GPT-6 Astra at 58.2 percent.

The model demonstrates enhanced precision in specialized fields such as finance and 3D modeling. Internal benchmarks show a 7.2-point increase in financial modeling tasks and an 11.6-point rise in financial research. The system tops all tested models on OfficeQA Pro v2 for general office work. In 3D applications, the model works directly with game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine. On the BenchCAD benchmark, it scores 92.7 percent with tools, approaching the 96.2 percent achieved by Claude Opus 5.5. Moonshot has also introduced a '3D Make' feature that allows users to preview and export 3D models directly through the platform.

Hallucination rates have been reduced through targeted post-training. On Moonshot's internal stress test, claim-level hallucinations dropped from 23.4 percent to 8.3 percent. While GPT-6 Astra maintains a lead with a 5.5 percent rate, Moonshot notes that its test is designed to be a rigorous stressor rather than a measure of general error. The company also introduced a high-speed variant that operates two to three times faster, providing options for users who prioritize latency over maximum depth of reasoning.

Context and security considerations remain central to the release strategy. The model retains a one-million-token context window and handles both text and image inputs. It sits at the top of the Pareto frontier, meaning no other model with a comparable parameter count scores higher on the intelligence index. Moonshot addressed cybersecurity concerns by removing cyber-related data from both training phases for the open-weights release. This decision reduced its score on internal vulnerability reproduction tests from 90.5 percent to 81.0 percent, a deliberate trade-off to balance offensive capability with defensive utility for auditors.

The outlook for the AI market suggests a tighter race between open and proprietary systems. By combining lower costs with performance that closely mirrors top-tier competitors, Moonshot is challenging the assumption that the highest scores require the highest prices. The upcoming release of model weights could accelerate the adoption of open-weights models in enterprise environments, particularly where data privacy and cost control are paramount. As the gap narrows to three points, the focus will shift from raw capability to efficiency and specialized application performance.

For New England businesses and tech firms, this release offers a viable alternative to dominant proprietary models. The reduction in API costs could lower barriers to entry for mid-sized companies looking to integrate advanced reasoning into their operations. The improved performance in coding and 3D modeling may also benefit local industries ranging from software development to architectural visualization. As the market adjusts to these new price points, expect increased competition across the board, with other providers likely to respond with their own pricing and performance updates in the coming months.
