A 30-year-old woman died last week after a sanitation truck struck her while she crossed a busy Brooklyn intersection. The accident occurred just after 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 in the Bath Beach neighborhood.
Police said the victim was walking across Bay Parkway when the driver turned from Cropsey Avenue onto the main road. The impact threw her to the ground. Medics transported her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Timothy Mcvey, 41, of Staten Island, remained at the scene following the crash. He was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian. He also faced a charge of failure to exercise due care.
The victim leaves behind her parents and a twin sister. A family friend told CBS News New York that the woman worked in retail. She had plans to pursue a career in graphic design. The friend added that the woman had a boyfriend and the couple discussed getting married.
Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group, reported that at least 30 people were killed or seriously injured along Bay Parkway between 2021 and 2025. Neighbors and advocates have long pushed for improved safety measures on the seven-lane roadway.
