Russell Brand was found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday in a London court. The former Hollywood actor and British television personality faced seven charges in total. He was acquitted of the remaining counts, including two additional rape charges and one attempted indecent assault charge. Brand had pleaded not guilty to all accusations before the trial began.

Justice Joel Bennathan read the verdict in Southwark Crown Court. He told Brand that the result carries a significant custodial term. The judge stated that Brand must remain in prison until his formal sentencing on Monday. Under British sentencing guidelines, the maximum penalty for rape is life imprisonment. The maximum for one count of sexual assault is 10 years.

Brand, 51, was a prominent figure in British media during the 2000s. He hosted a BBC radio show and appeared in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He also wrote best-selling biographies detailing his struggles with addiction. His profile grew further in the United States after his 2010 marriage to pop star Katy Perry. The couple divorced in 2012. In recent years, Brand moved to Florida and built a large online audience discussing politics and his Christian faith.

The four-week trial heard testimony from multiple women. Prosecutors described Brand as ruthless and calculating. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones told jurors that Brand had an indiscriminate desire for sexual contact. The legal team argued that women were a means to an end in his life. They labeled him a sexual predator during closing arguments.

The jury found Brand guilty of raping a woman in 2009 at his home. The victim met him after one of his comedy shows. He was also found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman at a party in 2004. In that incident, he grabbed her breasts. A third guilty verdict came for an assault at a London radio station between 2004 and 2005. Brand kissed and groped the woman during that encounter. A fourth guilty verdict involved an assault during an advertisement recording in 2009. He pressed his face into her groin during that session.

The accusers do not know each other. They reported the incidents to police after a documentary aired in Britain in 2023. Brand took the stand last week to present his defense. He admitted to being obsessed with sex when he was a young celebrity. He told the court he was persuasive and seductive. He acknowledged that he used his fame to facilitate sexual access. He called his behavior reckless philandering and idiocy. He stated that consent is more important than sex itself.

Brand’s wife, Laura Gallacher, also testified. She described him as a caring and wonderful father. The couple married in 2017 and have three young children. They have recently posted videos online analyzing Bible verses. In a statement after the verdict, Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police said Brand used his status to exploit women. Furphy noted that Brand’s sense of entitlement grew as his profile rose. He praised the victims for their courage in coming forward.

Brand held hands with his wife as he left the court. Security guards flanked the pair during their appearances. He told reporters at the start of the trial that he felt blessed. He expressed hope that the process would lead to good outcomes for everyone involved.
