Russell Brand denied all seven counts of sexual misconduct charged against him on Wednesday, standing in the witness box at Southwark Crown Court in London. The 51-year-old actor and comedian entered the courtroom with his wife, Laura Gallacher, and stated that the day was dedicated to truth and justice. His lawyer, Ian Winter, presented three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault to the jury. Brand answered no to each charge, asserting that he did not force any of the six alleged victims to act against their will.

The trial has spanned two weeks, during which prosecutors detailed a case covering misconduct between 1999 and 2009. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones described Brand as ruthless, calculating, and manipulative. The jury heard testimony from six women who do not know one another. These complainants reported separate incidents, including an alleged rape at a hotel in Bournemouth in 1999, an attempted drag into a bathroom at an MTV office in London in 2001, and an alleged oral rape in a bar toilet in 2004. Other allegations include groping at a radio station, an alleged anal rape at Brand's home in 2009, and an incident during a commercial recording in 2009.

Brand acknowledged on the stand that he was obsessed with sex in his younger years. He described his earlier behavior as beyond reckless philandering and admitted that he allowed his fame to facilitate sexual access. He stated that this dynamic was wrong, though he denied being desperate for sex to the point where he could not function without it. Brand emphasized that consent is fundamental, essential, and necessary, often more important than sex itself. He noted that his entire life has been consumed by these accusations since anonymous allegations surfaced in a newspaper and a TV documentary in 2023.

The comedian said the allegations have had a devastating impact on his personal life. He claimed that friends and colleagues abandoned him and that no one with relevant evidence was willing to testify in his defense. Brand stated that the trauma of the allegations came at the expense of his marriage, his children, and his health. He specifically mentioned being barred from staying with his baby son at Great Ormond Street Hospital after the child underwent open heart surgery. The hospital cited the published material as the reason for the restriction.

Brand rose to prominence in the early 2000s through stand-up comedy, television hosting, and a BBC radio show. He appeared in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek and was briefly married to Katy Perry. In recent years, he moved to Florida and built a large online following with content mixing wellness, conspiracy theories, and religious devotion. The current charges cover the decade when he transitioned from a rising comedian to a major celebrity in the United Kingdom.

Prosecutors stated that the six women went to police separately after the 2023 documentary aired. British law protects the identities of victims of sexual violence from the media for life. As he completed his first day on the stand, Brand reiterated his plea. He told the court that not guilty is his plea in every single case. The trial continues at Southwark Crown Court as the defense presents its argument against the prosecution's evidence.
