The Miami Dolphins held a 6-3 lead over the New England Patriots in the second quarter of Sunday afternoon's game at Hard Rock Stadium. The margin shifted in the Patriots' favor after Zane Gonzalez converted a 52-yard field goal that bounced off the left upright. The kick gave Miami its first lead of the day, a position the source notes few anticipated.
Gonzalez's successful attempt capped a functional offensive drive for the Dolphins. Malik Washington caught a deep out pass for 23 yards against Christian Gonzalez, marking the largest gain of the sequence. Kevin Coleman later secured a six-yard reception from a stacked formation to convert a third-and-three situation. The Patriots' defense limited the damage on subsequent plays, with Cory Durden stopping Ollie Gordon three yards behind the line of scrimmage.
Elijah Ponder and Jaylen Reed combined for a second-down sack. A short run on third down set up the long field goal, which proved sufficient to put Miami ahead. The Patriots' offense has gained 22 yards on its last six plays across two drives, facing pressure to generate a response.
Earlier in the first quarter, the Patriots' defense recorded three sacks of Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis. Cory Durden recorded a sack on first down when Willis had no downfield options. Christian Barmore and Gabe Jacas split another sack on a subsequent play. Durden, who previously had 0.5 career sacks, increased his total to 1.5 in just two drives. The sacks contributed to keeping the Dolphins off the board early.
The score was tied 3-3 following a pivotal turnover in the first quarter. Efton Chism fumbled the ball after catching a swing pass in space. Jacob Rodriguez punched the loose ball out of bounds, and the Dolphins recovered at the New England 19-yard line. The recovery placed Miami immediately in field-goal range.
The Patriots' defense forced a kick by tackling Chris Bell short of the line on third-and-13. Gonzalez's 31-yard field goal attempt was good, tying the game. A holding penalty by Tanner Arkin on the preceding first down had moved the Dolphins into a better field position. The turnover resulted directly from Chism's decision to juke while two defenders were approaching.
The Patriots had opened the scoring with a three-point lead. Their third drive began with Corey Kiner gaining 20 yards and crossing midfield. However, the drive ended after Drake Maye was sacked by former Patriot Joshua Uche on third-and-8. Rhamondre Stevenson exited the backfield before Uche broke through the line. Mitchell Wishnowsky punted the ball, which landed softly on the wet turf and was downed by Erick Hunter at the 11-yard line.
The Dolphins had struggled to generate offense prior to the turnover, gaining 13 yards on nine plays. The Patriots' defense also secured a first down for Miami at the end of the first quarter after Joshua Farmer was flagged for being offside. Ollie Gordon then ran seven yards up the middle to extend the Dolphins' drive. The game is scheduled to continue with the Dolphins facing a second-and-four from their own 23-yard line.
The Patriots enter this matchup seeking their third consecutive victory over the Dolphins. They are 4-3 overall but have a 1-3 record on the road this season. The Dolphins are 1-5 and secured their first win of the season last week against the Jets. The game is being played in wet and rainy conditions, a factor noted as critical for ball security.
