Dr. Rhea Rogers, a board-certified physician and host of the program Aging Untold, stated that GLP-1 weight-loss medications are increasingly being prescribed to children. These drugs, widely used by adults, are now entering pediatric care to manage obesity cases that do not respond to diet and exercise alone.

Rogers explained that for some young patients, standard behavioral modifications are insufficient. She noted that genetic factors often play a role in weight retention. When body size reaches a certain threshold, it can trigger hormonal dysregulation. In these cases, lifestyle changes may not be enough to restore metabolic balance.

The physician described GLP-1 agonists as effective tools for reducing what she calls food noise and food chatter. She also characterized the drugs as anti-inflammatory agents. According to Rogers, these medications provide additional support for children whose bodies require medical intervention due to hormone imbalances.

Specific criteria determine who is eligible for the prescription. For patients with diabetes, the age requirement starts at 10 years old. Experts indicate that the ideal candidate for weight-loss treatment has a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile. Candidates must also have a history where lifestyle changes failed to produce results. This group includes those with developed hormone problems that necessitate medical management.

Rogers emphasized that the medication is a tool rather than a miracle cure. She stated that clinicians must treat the entire scenario, not just the weight. This approach acknowledges that the drugs address specific physiological issues while patients continue to manage their overall health.

The cost of these medications remains a primary barrier for many families. For patients who cannot afford the drugs or choose not to take them, the current standard of care remains well-balanced meals and a healthy lifestyle. The financial gap determines which children receive pharmacological support and which rely solely on behavioral strategies.
