Search behavior for home services has shifted away from traditional click-throughs and toward AI-generated summaries. According to data from Honeyb, 70% of Google searches for these services now begin with an AI-written answer. This change affects local contractors, surf schools, and other small businesses that rely on being named in automated recommendations rather than just ranking in search results.

Honeyb analyzed 1,825 buying queries to determine how often AI engines mention specific businesses. The study found that AI models frequently recommend third-party directories like Angi and Thumbtack over individual local providers. In a test conducted on October 26, 2026, Angi received a perfect score of 10 out of 10 from the Gemini engine. The model listed Angi alongside other major platforms when answering queries about home service marketplaces, suggesting that directory profiles may now outweigh a business's own homepage in AI visibility.

A report by the Pew Research Center from July 2025 supports this shift in user behavior. When Google displayed an AI summary, users clicked a search result only 8% of the time. Without the summary, click rates were 15%. Links embedded within the AI summary itself received clicks in just 1% of visits. This data indicates that if an AI model does not name a business in its initial response, the business is largely invisible to that user.

Several free tools now allow local owners to test their AI visibility. Honeyb offers a free check that separates business recognition from active recommendation. Goodie provides an AI Visibility Index tracking over 47,700 brands across 31 industries. Rank Prompt tests visibility across ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, while Frase focuses on whether AI engines link back to a site. Profound offers a seven-day trial with 50 prompts per day, and PromptWatch requires a seven-day trial of its $95 monthly plan for access.

The competitive landscape remains fluid. Honeyb's 2026 research asked four AI models the same buyer question 21 times across different categories. In only five of those instances did all four models agree on a single favorite business. In the remaining 16 tests, the models disagreed on the top recommendation. This inconsistency suggests that no single business has permanently locked down the top spot in most local categories.

AI models rely heavily on third-party citations rather than direct business websites. G2 received the most citations with 21, followed by Forbes with 12 and a Zapier blog with 8. For local businesses, this means maintaining active profiles on review platforms and directories is essential for AI visibility. Industry studies indicate that keeping these profiles active can triple citation rates in AI answers.

Local owners can use these tools to monitor their standing against competitors. Running a check weekly on the same day allows businesses to track changes in how AI models perceive their brand. This low-cost monitoring method provides insight into whether a business is merely recognized by name or actively recommended to potential customers.
