Merrimack fans watching from the stands saw a familiar display of offensive firepower on Saturday night. The Warriors scored ten goals across a two-game series against UConn, securing a win and a tie that extended their unbeaten streak to seven games. This performance keeps the team at the top of its conference, a position that feels predictable given the roster construction.
The squad returns 18 players from the group that won the program's first Hockey East tournament title last season. Those veterans accounted for 89.1 percent of the team's points in the previous campaign. That depth has translated into a 4.5 goals per game average, a rate that leads Hockey East and ranks sixth in the nation.
Junior forward Nick Pierre has been the primary engine for that attack. He recorded a hat trick in the 5-5 tie with UConn on Saturday. That performance brought his season total to eight goals in eight games. Pierre now leads the conference in scoring. He is tied for second in the nation, trailing only Jayden Perron of Michigan. His 12 points are the highest total on the Merrimack roster.
The Warriors still face a challenge on the other end of the ice. They allowed nine goals during the UConn weekend. Tightening up the defensive structure is the next step for a team that looks poised for a long run if it can balance its production with its protection.
Boston University managed to collect five of six possible points in a series with Maine. The Terriers won Friday's game 7-2. They scored on their first three shifts and added a power play goal 4:49 into the second period to build a 4-0 lead. Saturday proved harder, as Maine took a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Tynan Lawrence scored twice in the third period to pull Boston University even. Freshman Caleb Malhotra then deked past two Maine defenders to score the winner in overtime. The Terriers' ability to adjust between games showed in these two different victories.
Providence dropped its first game of the season on the road at Quinnipiac. The Bobcats won 5-1, powered by a hat trick from Andon Cerbone. This mirrors a first round matchup from the previous NCAA Tournament where Quinnipiac also prevailed over the Friars.
Boston College and Northeastern split their home and home series in overtime. Dean Letourneau scored the winner for the Eagles in a 3-2 victory on Friday. Tyler Fukakusa gave the Huskies a 4-3 win on Saturday with a goal 2:06 into the extra session. Lawton Zacher returned for Northeastern from an upper body injury. He stopped 91 of 97 shots over the weekend, setting career highs for saves in both games.
Harvard defeated UMass 2-1 in Thursday's opener. Matthew Morden scored at 17:55 of the second period for the Crimson. This was the first game for head coach Rob Rassey. UMass took the series winner on Friday. Jack Musa scored the decisive goal in the third period, and Larry Keenan added an empty-netter with 15 seconds left for a 4-2 final score.
Holy Cross and Bentley split their series. Danick Leroux stopped 32 shots for a shutout in the Crusaders' 2-0 win in Worcester. Bentley took the home game 4-3. Alec Leonard scored the winning goal at 8:08 of the third period. UMass Lowell and Colgate also split, with the Raiders forcing overtime before winning 4-3. Dartmouth started 2-0 with shutouts over Alaska Fairbanks, as Emmett Croteau stopped 41 shots and Drew Stewart scored a hat trick. Halloween games saw small crowds, with fans in costumes filling the empty seats until 2037, when October 31 next falls on a Saturday.
