Gotham FC won the 2026 NWSL Shield after a 2-0 victory over the Utah Royals at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

The result secured the league's top seed for the New York club, which finished the regular season with the most points. San Diego Wave placed second, while Seattle Reign captured the final playoff position with a 1-0 win over Orlando Pride.

Gotham FC entered the final match needing only a draw to claim their first Shield. The team had faced a challenging end to the season, dealing with roster rotation and injuries that pushed the points race to the final day. Washington Spirit and San Diego Wave remained in contention until the last weeks. San Diego kept pressure on with a 1-0 win against Bay FC, but Gotham's early offensive play determined the outcome. Guro Reiten scored the first goal off a cross from Midge Purce. Jaedyn Shaw, returning from injury, entered as a substitute and scored the second goal to seal the win.

The 2026 season featured a 30-match schedule, the longest in league history. This extended calendar impacted all 16 clubs, though Gotham FC managed a late-season surge despite setbacks. Key players including defender Bruninha and rookie forward Jordynn Dudley suffered season-ending injuries. Midfielder Jaelin Howell left the final match with a right ankle injury and will be evaluated before the playoffs. The return of Shaw and Rose Lavelle added stability to a squad that relied heavily on depth throughout the year.

Seattle Reign controlled their own destiny to earn the eighth and final playoff spot. The club's strategy this season emphasized defensive organization over goal scoring. Their 1-0 victory over Orlando Pride reflected that identity. Jordyn Bugg, a center back, scored the winning goal just past the one-hour mark. The goal resulted from a set piece involving two flicks and a precise finish. Seattle played with high motivation for the match, which also honored veteran player Jess Fishlock.

The playoff bracket is now set, with home-field advantages distributed based on final standings. Gotham FC and San Diego Wave, ranked first and second, will host quarterfinal matches. Washington Spirit and Kansas City Current also secured home games after their final-day victories. San Diego Wave, Angel City, and Kansas City Current enter the postseason on strong runs. All three teams are unbeaten in their last five matches, with Kansas City holding a five-game winning streak.

The 2026 NWSL playoffs begin on Friday, November 6. The championship game is scheduled for November 21 and will be broadcast on CBS. Quarterfinal matchups include San Diego Wave against Utah Royals, Kansas City Current against Angel City, Gotham FC against Seattle Reign, and Washington Spirit against Portland Thorns. The schedule spans three days, with games starting at various times in the afternoon and evening.

The decision day matches confirmed the final regular season standings. All 16 clubs played simultaneously in the afternoon, ensuring that every team's fate was decided on the same day. The results solidified the competitive hierarchy for the postseason, with the top teams securing advantageous positions in the bracket. The league moves from the regular season to the knockout stage with all eight playoff teams identified.
