Aston Villa has scored twelve goals in its first three matches of the UEFA Champions League league phase. The English club travels to Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday, November 2, at 20:00 GMT to face Barcelona in matchday four. Villa is currently ranked second in the standings behind Paris Saint-Germain. The squad aims to become the first team in this format to win four consecutive opening games.
Barcelona enters the match as the reigning La Liga leader. The Catalan side has won ten of its eleven domestic games this season. However, their European campaign has faced turbulence. They suffered a 4-2 defeat to PSG in their last competitive fixture. A 2-1 home loss to Real Madrid followed shortly after in El Clasico. Barcelona returned to winning form with a 6-1 victory over Alaves on Saturday, reclaiming the top spot in Spain's top flight.
Aston Villa's European journey has been a rapid ascent. The club returned to the Premier League in 2019 after a three-year stint in the Championship. Owner Nassef Sawiris and co-investor Wes Edens completed their takeover that year. Manager Unai Emery arrived in October 2022. He led the team to a top-four finish last season and a Europa League title in May. That victory qualified Villa for the Champions League for the first time in forty-one years.
Emery faces a difficult history against Barcelona. He has coached thirty matches against the Catalan club and won only three. His win percentage against them stands at ten percent. His heaviest defeat came in March 2017 when his Paris Saint-Germain side lost 6-1 at Camp Nou. That result became known as La Remontada. Villa's last meeting with Barcelona dates back to the 1983 European Super Cup final. Villa won that series on aggregate but lost the first leg 1-0.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick acknowledged the challenge ahead. "Aston Villa is in great form and Unai Emery is one of the best coaches in Europe," Flick said. He noted that any opponent at this level has the quality to cause problems. Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon, who is on loan from Villa, also praised his former team. "They’re in great form and it’s going to be a great game," Gordon said. He added that Villa players are always fully engaged.
Injuries have impacted Barcelona's defensive lineup. Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, and Xavi Espart are unavailable. Andreas Christensen returned to training but will not start. Manager Flick experimented at the weekend by placing Frenkie de Jong in central defense. Lamine Yamal leads the attack with twelve goals and eleven assists this season. He holds the record for most assists by a teenager in the Champions League with thirteen.
Aston Villa faces its own defensive tests. Keeper Zion Suzuki scored an own goal in a 1-1 draw with Fulham on Saturday. That match extended Villa's unbeaten run to five games in the Premier League. The club recently announced legal action against pundit Jamie Carragher over comments he made about the team. The match between the two sides is scheduled to begin at 20:00 GMT on Tuesday, November 2, at Spotify Camp Nou.
