Nocturne Episode 2 Sends Saga Into Jurek's Ward

Episode 2 of Nocturne sends FBI Agent Saga Bauer into the psychiatric hospital's Restricted Housing Unit under the name Esther Desjardins, adopting a schizophrenia diagnosis to match her mother Denise Bauer's condition. Her objective is to determine how Jurek Walter passes messages out of the ward. Meanwhile, Jurek manipulates staff inside the unit, and Jonah Lynn chases a figure through the woods outside the hunting cabin serving as the operation's headquarters.

A cold-open interrogation scene establishes how the principals connect. Jonah came to Fairhaven from Philadelphia to assist Sam Mendel, a police officer and Jonah's friend, on a case. Jonah later met and married Denise Bauer, Sam's ex-wife, and became a father figure to Saga, whose mother suffers from schizophrenia and dementia. Jonah lost his wife and daughter in an accident whose details remain unrevealed on the show.

Jonah and Sam later questioned Jurek Walter together about his crimes. Jurek buried victims alive, supplying food, water and air to extend their suffering. During the interrogation, Jurek raised Sam's wife Rebecca by name, and Sam had to be restrained. Jonah has suspected since that Jurek orchestrated Rebecca's disappearance while in custody, using an accomplice who was never caught.

The reappearance of Michael Frost revived that thread. Frost confirmed he had been with a woman called Becky whose eye condition matched Rebecca's, and said his sister Felicia remains missing. That account strengthened Saga's case for going undercover to trace Jurek's communication channel.

Inside the ward, Jurek staged a choking incident when the hospital began scrutinizing Restricted Housing Unit staff for a possible leak. He slipped a note into the pocket of Gary, a new nurse on the ward. Two former nurses told Jonah they quit because they felt Jurek was working to gain their confidence.

Karl, another nurse, responded to Jurek's friendly manner. Jurek can implicate Karl in a felony, an offense that carries prison time and would cost Karl his job.

Jonah has said throughout the episode that he, Agent Quinn, Saga and Nate are being watched while they set up the undercover operation at his wife's old hunting cabin. When he spotted someone in the forest and gave chase, he found a symbol etched into the trees, visible only from a specific vantage point. Saga found the same mark, a circle split vertically by a double-pointed arrow, on a wall in a padded room where graffiti had been smudged into that shape.

Nocturne airs on a weekly schedule. Episode 2 concluded with Saga committed under her alias inside the unit Jurek occupies.
