Brighton and Hove Albion travelers to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to face Manchester City in the EFL Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET, with the match available on Paramount+. Betting odds favor City at -150, while the draw is priced at +300 and Brighton at +320. The contest serves as a direct test of the Seagulls' position in the Premier League standings.
Brighton currently holds the third spot in the Premier League table. The club boasts the division's best attack and the third-best defense, resulting in a goal difference of plus-16. Manchester City trails that metric with a goal difference of plus-11. Brighton has already defeated Arsenal 3-0 this season. A victory over City on Wednesday would place Brighton two points behind the league leaders, although Arsenal may extend that gap before then.
The team's momentum persists despite a 2-0 loss at Liverpool earlier this season. Manager Fabian Hurzeler criticized Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola's approach, stating that there was one team who really tried to create and try to win this game. Brighton faced seven blocked shots in that match. An early goal from Yasin Ayari or Charalampos Kostoulas could have altered the final score.
The current form is notable given the departures over the summer. Danny Welbeck, the previous season's top scorer, and Jan Paul van Hecke, the leader in league minutes, both left the club. Carlos Baleba, a midfielder expected to be a future asset, struggled with injuries last year. Luka Vuskovic arrived to replace Van Hecke. Wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh, both top 10 in key attacking measures last season, have not played this campaign due to injuries.
Hurzeler has adjusted the roster to maintain performance. Maxim De Cuyper has been moved permanently to left back, adding attacking drive. Kostoulas and Diego Gomez have been integrated gradually. Pascal Gross, 35, has recorded four assists and three goals in the league. According to Gradient data supplied to CBS Sports, Gross ranks in the 99th percentile for pressures leading to dangerous situations.
Statistical data reflects this intensity. Brighton allows opponents an average of 7.6 passes per defensive action, the lowest in the league. Only City concedes fewer active possession minutes than Brighton's 21.5. The club also leads the division in counterattacking goals, goals from corners, high-value chances, and shots from outside the box.
Caveats exist regarding the sample size of eight games. Brighton held a man advantage in two matches against Aston Villa and Coventry, accounting for over 10% of their data. They also played 33 minutes with 10 men against Sunderland while protecting a 1-0 lead. Their 23 goals significantly exceed their 16.2 expected goals. The win over Arsenal relied on long-range strikes from Gross and Kostoulas.
Defensively, Brighton has conceded 11.4 expected goals, benefiting from shot-stopping that may not be sustainable. Bart Verbruggen's quality has masked weaknesses. The club allows the third-highest expected goals per shot in the division, partly due to weak set-piece defense. They allow 0.117 expected goals per shot from open play, which is 10% above the league average. Chelsea exposed this vulnerability early in the season by breaking the press.
Brighton appears better positioned than any rival for a fifth English Champions League spot, particularly if a sanction damages City's league standing. Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, and Brentford have produced similar expected goals figures but have accumulated far fewer points. The result against City on Wednesday will provide the clearest indication of Brighton's competitive standing.
