Alvin Hellerstein died on Wednesday at the age of 92. He was a senior federal judge in the Southern District of New York who had recently presided over the prosecution of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro on charges of torture and drug trafficking.

Hellerstein served as a fixture in New York federal courts for nearly three decades. President Bill Clinton appointed him to the bench in 1998, and he assumed senior status in 2011. During his tenure, he managed a caseload that included the majority of civil wrongful death and property damage lawsuits stemming from the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. He also oversaw major fraud and market manipulation cases.

The judge was known for his religious observance and its influence on his judicial process. An Orthodox Jew, he explained in a 2013 law review article that he viewed his work as reflecting the image of God. He noted that he scheduled sentencing hearings for Fridays to allow time for reflection on Shabbat regarding the fairness of his rulings. He served as president of the Jewish Center, a synagogue on Manhattan's Upper West Side, and as chairman of the Board of Jewish Education.

His decisions often drew national attention, particularly in cases involving former President Donald Trump. In 2020, Hellerstein ordered the release of Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen, concluding that the Justice Department retaliated against him for writing a book by attempting to revoke his home confinement. More recently, Hellerstein blocked Trump's effort to move his 2024 conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to federal court for dismissal based on presidential immunity.

Laura Taylor Swain, the chief judge of the court, described Hellerstein as an insightful and dedicated lawyer. She stated that his energetic service continued until his death and that he would be sorely missed. Jewish law scholar Alan Dershowitz previously characterized Hellerstein as fair and well-balanced. Dershowitz noted that Hellerstein adhered to two biblical principles from Deuteronomy: to always seek justice and not to recognize faces.

Born in New York City, Hellerstein earned his bachelor's and law degrees at Columbia University, where he served as law review editor. Before his appointment to the federal bench, he spent 38 years at the law firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan. He also served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, the legal branch of the U.S. Army.
