Los Angeles football fans saw the Rams turn a sluggish performance into a decisive 24-9 win over the Chargers on Sunday. The victory gives the Rams their first back-to-back wins of the year. It also extends the Chargers' winless streak to seven games, marking their worst start since 2000.
The Rams started the game poorly. They gained only 24 yards on their first 15 plays. The offense failed to secure a first down on its first five drives, a first for coach Sean McVay. Justin Herbert threw an interception early in the game. Quentin Lake intercepted the pass and returned it 45 yards to set up a field goal. The Rams trailed 9-3 at the end of the first half.
The momentum shifted when Tutu Atwell caught a 40-yard pass for the Rams' first first down of the game. Kyren Williams then rushed 19 seconds into the second half for a touchdown. This score put the Rams ahead late in the first half. Blake Corum added a 23-yard rushing touchdown early in the third quarter. Puka Nacua caught an 18-yard pass from Matthew Stafford for another score later in the third quarter.
Stafford finished the game with 157 passing yards and one touchdown. Nacua caught 11 passes for 80 yards. Corum rushed for 73 yards total. The Rams won the matchup for the second time in three seasons since both teams moved to the Los Angeles area a decade ago.
The Chargers' offense gained 295 yards but could not keep up. Herbert completed passes for 257 yards but threw two interceptions. He has thrown at least one interception in every game this season. Mike McDaniel retained play-calling duties despite the team's start. The defense struggled to stop the Rams, who were missing injured receiver Davante Adams.
Injuries affected both teams. Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley hurt his shoulder in the first quarter but returned to play. Safety Derwin James missed his fourth straight game and was placed on injured reserve on Saturday. Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson hurt his shoulder early in the second half and did not return. Cornerback Trent McDuffie injured his back late in the game but stayed on the sideline.
The Rams travel to Washington on Sunday. The Chargers host Houston on the same day.
