Jayson Tatum scored the game-winning mid-range jumper as the clock expired, securing a 125-124 overtime victory for the Boston Celtics against the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night at TD Garden. The win snapped a defensive struggle that saw Boston allow the Nets to tie the game late in regulation, but Tatum’s final shot ended the contest decisively.
The forward played 42 minutes and 19 seconds, the most time on the floor for any player on either roster. This marked the first back-to-back game for Boston this season, and Tatum, who returned to full health following Achilles surgery 18 months ago, exceeded the minutes of veteran Paul George, who played 36 minutes. Tatum’s extended run was critical as the Celtics navigated a tight matchup against the Nets.
Tatum controlled the ball for the majority of the game, handling the ball on 88 touches and delivering 56 total passes without committing a single turnover. His playmaking resulted in eight assists, leading to a team-high 17 points created by his passing. These numbers accounted for 45.6 percent of Boston’s total scoring output. The Celtics had struggled with ball security earlier in the season, making Tatum’s clean performance a key factor in the win.
In the fourth quarter, Tatum found Derrick White for an and-one dunk that gave Boston a late lead. Although the Nets erased that advantage to force overtime, Tatum’s ability to draw fouls gave Boston an advantage from the line. He generated an NBA-best 22 free throw attempts on the night, sinking 18 of them. This volume of shooting opportunities contrasted with his limited free throw attempts in Boston’s first three games.
Through four games, Tatum ranks fifth in the NBA in assist points created with 83. Only Trae Young, Tyrese Haliburton, Jalen Johnson, and Luka Doncic have created more scoring for teammates during the early stretch. Tatum also ties Cade Cunningham for fifth in total assists with 32. Seven of his eight assists on Tuesday led to two-point baskets, showcasing a different style of play than his typical perimeter passing.
The Celtics will look to maintain their momentum as they continue their schedule. Tatum’s performance demonstrated his ability to drive to the rim and create for teammates even when defenses collapsed. His late-game decisions, including the pass to White and the final jumper, were the deciding factors in a close contest.
