Marisa Tomei accepted the role of Tara in the racing thriller “The Mongoose” without hesitation, citing the project’s blend of high-octane action and emotional depth. The film pairs her with Liam Neeson, who stars as Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, a decorated Special Forces soldier returning from Afghanistan.

Tomei, 61, described her character as an American hero’s ex-wife who is dealing with her own version of PTSD. The narrative is set in Georgia, a state Tomei noted is a hub for military personnel and training, specifically for Special Forces units. Although the story takes place in the South, actual filming occurred across multiple locations in Australia.

The central conflict for Tara stems from an engagement to a man who is revealing hidden aspects of his personality. Tomei explained that Tara has a specific type and has endured rocky relationships in the past. The love between Tara and Fang remains reciprocal and deep, rooted in a connection that began in high school, even though the couple did not work out for various reasons.

Tomei stated that the plot’s momentum is driven by Tara’s current relationship troubles, which trigger a series of events leading to the film’s action sequences. She emphasized that the movie balances the trauma of war with humor and entertainment, noting that the stunts are incredible and the action is intense.

Despite having known Neeson, 74, only professionally, Tomei praised him as a legend in the industry. She highlighted his talent, kindness, and convivial nature, adding that she was welcomed with open arms by his long-standing team of collaborators. The two actors have built a rapport that supports the “soulmate connection” their characters share.

“The Mongoose” opens in theaters on Oct. 30.
