49ers Reunite With DeForest Buckner Ahead of Trade Deadline
San Francisco acquires the veteran defensive tackle from Indianapolis in a move that may be the first of several before November 10.

San Francisco general manager John Lynch answered the persistent questions from his own players by acquiring defensive tackle DeForest Buckner on Tuesday. The 49ers will send a 2027 fourth-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts to bring the veteran back to California. This trade marks the first major roster addition for the 6-1 team before the league's November 10 deadline.
Buckner was selected by San Francisco with the seventh overall pick in 2016. Lynch called the original trade of Buckner to Indianapolis in March 2020 the toughest decision of his tenure. The 49ers have since attempted to replicate Buckner's impact through various acquisitions, including Javon Kinlaw, Javon Hargrave, and Maliek Collins. Those efforts have not produced the same level of consistent pressure on the offensive line.
The move came after a loss to the Atlanta Falcons that exposed specific deficiencies in the San Francisco defense. The team recorded zero sacks in that contest and currently ranks 31st in the NFL in pressure rate when rushing four players. Head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that receiver and defensive line are the obvious areas of need. He noted that the staff has been working on potential trades involving those positions throughout the bye week.
Veteran offensive tackle Trent Williams, 38, said the players view draft picks as a gamble compared to proven talent. He expressed a desire for the team to make bold moves if the right opportunity arises. "For us [players], you always want the proven product," Williams said. "But it's a happy medium .. I don't look at it the same way they look at it."
The 49ers face an uncertain timeline regarding returning players. Wideout Mike Evans and defensive end Nick Bosa are expected to return from Achilles tendinitis and a calf injury, respectively. However, Shanahan acknowledged that the team must plan for the possibility that these players may not be available for every game. Rookie wideout De'Zhaun Stribling is expected to return in December from ankle surgery.
Shanahan said the team will evaluate whether additional trades make sense before the deadline. He cited the need to stockpile talent in case current players get injured. "We are getting a number of those guys back at both positions, but that also doesn't exclude us from looking to something that would make sense to help us," Shanahan said. The 49ers will resume play against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9.
Kittle, Juszczyk, and wideout Deebo Samuel Sr. celebrated the Buckner acquisition on social media. The team now has 10 days to decide if they will pursue other targets, such as Chargers pass rusher Khalil Mack or available wideouts like Jerry Jeudy. Lynch has previously executed major trades for offensive tackle Trent Williams and running back Christian McCaffrey, setting a precedent for bold moves during the season.
