Patriots Face Roster Crunch as Injury Rules Limit Flexibility
Two of eight available spots are already consumed, forcing staff to prioritize returns among six eligible players while guarding against future injuries.

The New England Patriots have only six remaining opportunities to activate players from injured reserve during the regular season. League rules permit eight players designated for return, but the team has already used two of those slots. This constraint creates a complex calculus for a coaching staff managing depth at critical positions while half the schedule remains.
Head coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged the difficulty of managing these limited spots. He stated that decisions rely on positional depth and immediate need. Vrabel noted that the staff does not want to make a habit of cycling players through the injury list. The recent return of wide receiver A.J. Brown consumed one spot. Brown missed the minimum four weeks following a high ankle sprain sustained in Week 1. He returned to the active roster two weeks ago for the game against the New York Jets.
Offensive tackle Marcus Bryant has claimed the second spot. Although he has not yet returned to active duty, his three-week practice window opened on October 14. This automatic activation secures his place in the limited designation. Special teamer Brenden Schooler did not consume a slot because he was placed on the non-football injury list. Outside linebacker Harold Landry also remains on the physically unable to perform list, which does not count toward the eight-player limit.
Six other players are currently eligible to return if their health permits. Wide receivers Mack Hollins and Romeo Doubs can return on November 8 and November 29, respectively. Fullback Reggie Gilliam is eligible on November 8. Guards Greg Van Roten and Alijah Vera-Tucker face return dates this week and November 29. Safety Dell Pettus is also eligible this week. Van Roten and Pettus did not participate in Wednesday practice. Vrabel indicated he did not expect them to be active for the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins.
The team must decide whether to use the remaining spots on these six players. Doing so would theoretically block the return of linebackers Quintayvious Hutchins and Khalil Jacobs, who are currently on injured reserve. Using all available spots would prevent the Patriots from activating any further players for the rest of the regular season. This scenario would reduce roster flexibility during the final stretch of the year.
Veteran guard Mike Onwenu presents a separate consideration. He suffered a serious ankle injury in Week 2 and is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season. However, teams are allowed two additional injury designations in the postseason. If the Patriots qualify for the playoffs, Onwenu could use one of those spots. The team reported perfect attendance at practice on Wednesday, with four players listed as limited due to minor ailments.
The coaching staff must balance immediate needs against long-term stability. Vrabel said the group is working to determine who is healthy enough to return. He noted that some players are not yet ready. The final roster decisions will depend on the depth available at each position as the season progresses.
